Education and aspirations: reading and
responding task answers
Sample task 1
- The writer is studying Chinese, English, history,
chemistry, maths and geography.
- The writer plays soccer on Saturday mornings, but if it
rains, he or she plays basketball. Sometimes there are
sports competitions.
- On his trip to China, the writer visited the sister
school, studied with the local students, played ball games
and visited famous historical sites.
- After university, the writer plans to travel in China
and to study Chinese there.
Sample task 2
In your answer, you should:
- use e-mail reply format
- write about your exam
- write about your new school (size, number of teachers
and students, comparison with your old school)
- write about any extra-curricular activities in which
you participate
- talk about your new classmates as requested in the
e-mail message.
Sample task 3
- Xiuying and Xiaofang are penfriends. Xiuying lives in
Beijing and Xiaofang in Australia. They last met in Beijing
when Xiaofang went for a visit.
- Xiuying wrote this letter because she wants Xiaofang to
give her some information about studying at a university in
Australia as she wants to go to Australia to study
engineering.

- response about receiving the letter
- talk about universities in Australia, in particular
those that offer engineering courses
- suggest how to apply for courses at these
universities.

- use letter format
- thank Xiaohua for his praise (write how you enjoy
learning Chinese)
- state whether there are overseas Chinese students in
your school
- tell roughly about how much time you spend at school
each day and how many days you go to school each week
- state how many school holidays you have each year and
in which seasons they are found
- suggest which month is the best time for Xiaohua to
come to Australia to study and explain why.
