Prescribed text, extract 1: scene 26

Summary of content

Extract one introduces the scene in the family kitchen where the conversation between Zhu's sisters, Jiazhen, Jiaqian and Jianing has taken place. Jiaqian's decision to move out has sparked off sentimental feelings, as well as making them consider their own opinions towards their father in relation to his recent cold relationship with Jiaqian; his needs and his attitude towards love. It then leads to a heated debate between Jiazhen and Jiaqian. They compare two very different types of love, their parents' conservative love and Jiaqian's romantic love.
