In order to demonstrate achievement of the outcomes for the HSC course in major study appreciation, a candidate is expected to prove that they have knowledge and understanding of a seminal dance work and era. This is demonstrated through the ability to draw upon knowledge and understandings of dance as an artform and apply these to the skills of critical analysis about works of dance and the socio-cultural context in which they exist. Higher order responses will show a sophisticated and articulate application of multiple analytical processes. This means that the candidate does not merely rely upon a physical description of the work in relation to the elements of dance, the dance form and background of the choreographer. These may be appropriate starting points for dance analysis, but consideration of some broader frameworks which may be employed to add depth to these traditional approaches will inform the interpretive and evaluative processes of your response.
