Home > Dance > Major Study > Composition > Manipulation of the elements of dance as they relate to concept/intent for 2 or 3 dancers
Look at the following images and consider these questions:
How would you describe the shapes in
each example?
Which shapes are harmonious and
which are contrasting?
What ideas might the partner shapes
communicate to an audience?

In relation to two or three dancers,
you should consider:
Activity 1
1. Construct a phrase that
communicates your intent.
2. Isolate and "freeze" shapes
within the phrase.
3. Identify the types of shapes you
have made. Are they symmetrical or asymmetrical, angular or curved? If they are
character-based, how do they communicate character?
4. Ask your dancers to emphasise the
identified characteristics of the shapes.
Activity 2
1. Ask your dancers to perform the
phrase in canon.
2. Identify new shape relationships
that result from the canon.
3. Ask your dancers to "freeze" in
shapes during the canon to emphasise these shape
relationships.
4. Reflect on audience viewpoint and
meaning in relationships created.
