Important questions to ask yourself:
- Have I written this for live
presentation? You must remember that your play is meant to be for the stage
and not for film.
- Have I kept the setting of
the play simple? Try to keep the setting of your play to one or two places.
This limits scene changes and avoids the script becoming one written for a
film.
- Have I developed believable
characters? Make sure your characters realistic in the way they speak and
act and that they suit the style of your
play.
- Have I got too many characters?
Limit the number of characters in the play to just enough to develop the
dramatic action. If you have too many it makes your plot too complicated and
then your play ends up too long.
- Does
something happen in the play? It is important that you have thought about
what you want to say in the play and that it there is a complication that ends
up being resolved.
- Have my stage directions
made the action clear? It is important that your stage directions help the
reader understand what you want to be happening on stage so that there is more
than just dialogue
- Is the play the right
length? Remember the script should be 15 – 25 pages long. If you are
under length you often haven’t had time to develop the plot or the
characters. If you have gone on too long you often haven’t kept the
dramatic action of the play moving.
