design submitted as hard copy which depicts the set design. The model or

of the performance space’s dimensions, audience configuration and sightlines

Students should work within the parameters of this project. Projects submitted
with items missing will be penalised. Material that exceeds the stipulated
requirements will be disregarded.
Criteria
- Originality, clarity and integrity of the directorial concept/vision
and the set design for the whole production.
- Dramatic effectiveness and appropriateness of the set design for
the play, performers and audience.
- Skill in conceiving and presenting a set design through the use of
space, texture, colour and composition to create dramatic meaning.
- Precision in the construction of the model or computer-aided design.
- Clarity and accuracy of the floorplans, diagrams and explanations
of the set design and any scenic changes.
Planning
Investigate model-making materials, such as foam board. Where possible
design for a theatre you can visit and view other set designs. The Sydney Theatre Company
, for example, has a number of set designs on public
display at its Wharf Complex.
Design
Ensure the design gives a sense of the whole play rather than just a
couple of scenes. Don't clutter your performance space, use it effectively.
Check audience sightlines. Indicate logical and workable scene changes.
Execution
Buy a 1:25mm scale rule and use it.
Don't waste your time building the whole theatre, only the stage.
Use materials that indicate the visual and textural material of the
actual set.
Glue and set pieces in position onto the stage. The inclusion of a figure
to scale on the set may be a good idea.
Label the set design including the name of the play (and scene if appropriate).
Ensure you indicate the type of theatre this is designed for.
Attach the design concept statement to the model.
