 Alternative energy
Students prepared to be disciplined in their use of this site will find it a source of information on human power and energy issues. It has commercially influenced explanations of the obvious topics in this area – human powered cars and bicycles – and the less than obvious, human powered generators. Students and teachers with an interest in human created power will enjoy researching the site and perhaps taking part in comments and forums on human powered machines. The site would be useful for those sections in the Science 7–10 syllabus and the Earth and Environmental Science areas concerned with alternative energy technologies. Students researching these technologies will find images, information and news on Biofuel, Hydrogen, Solar, Wind, and Transportation energy issues. R. Dircks

Australia’s world heritage – location map Selecting this link will take you to an external site. Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
The 16 Australian properties on the World Heritage List are clearly shown on a map of Australia. The format for each heritage site opens pages of clearly written explicit text with several colourful, labelled photographs from the site. A brief introduction is followed by bullet points, highlighting its outstanding Values, which are the reason for inclusion on the world list. Clicking on the map, or on the name in the list, such as Shark Bay, Western Australia values, gives information on the zoological importance of its largely undisturbed peninsula and island habitats. The diversity of its vegetation, avifauna, reptiles and amphibians, endangered mammals and marine fauna make interesting reading. Information on Shark Bay and Map of Shark Bay are informative pdf files to download. Clear navigation tools direct the user to the other 15 sites and to background information in About world heritage, Criteria, and Laws. C. Keane

Case study: air quality in the Illawarra Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
A detailed discussion about various pollutants, their origin and control is available on this section of a much larger authoritative site. Although there is no specific outcome of the Earth and Environmental Science: Stage 6 syllabus (amended 2002) that covers air quality, this site is, nonetheless, useful background reading. Topics, which include Community concern with air quality, could be useful when discussing aspects of the impacts of human activities within The local environment study. This site is easy to navigate and the information presented is not overly technical with language suitable for most senior students. J. Berry

Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Accounting Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
This detailed site has several innovative tools that can be used in the classroom environment. It details the causes and effects of greenhouse emissions and looks at how the world community is addressing the problem. One of the pioneering aspects of the site is the inclusion of online calculators and carbon sequestration predictions showing the effect that forests, sheep, and cattle have on the carbon cycle. Agriculture and Science students are well-supported when using these calculators, as the theory behind the calculators, such as derivations and variables, is extensively detailed and resourced to other websites. The numeracy aspect of the site will be welcome in Science courses. B. Maher

Earth science Australia Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
A great deal of care, time and money has gone into the creation of this extraordinary site. A large amount of absorbing information is carefully arranged into headings such as Geological processes and structures, Energy and minerals, Flooding, and Fossils/time/space. Within these, topics are very easily accessed and students will appreciate the clear explanations, animations, and terrific imagery. The site is worth visiting for the diagrams alone. They are mostly simple line drawings but they communicate extremely well; the diagrams distinguishing P and S earthquake waves could be the clearest on the internet. The site has educational application beyond Science syllabuses, and teachers interested in Cyber education will be intrigued by what is done here and how it is done. R. Dircks

The Precambrian Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
A detailed summary of some of the most important aspects of the Precambrian era is available at this extensive, easy to navigate site. Many useful links are also provided. After an initial description of the Precambrian, which includes the Hadean, Archean and Proterzoic eras, the site presents evidence for the lack of free oxygen in the atmosphere, the chemical origin of life, and examples of early life via actual fossil evidence and reconstructions. Although an American site, much of the evidence presented here is from Australian sources, which is very useful for module 8.2 and module 9.3 of the Earth and Environmental Science: Stage 6 syllabus (amended 2002). Vital water graphics: an overview of the state of the world’s fresh and marine waters Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
Based on a 2002 United Nations study, this impressively visual water study uses graphs, maps, and diagrams to illustrate growing concerns about climate change and water issues. The effects of water usage, trends and threats to water resources are discussed, as are biodiversity, species distribution, and population changes. Strategies for the management of water resources are outlined. Freshwater resources identifies quantity and distribution, explains the water cycle, and shows the relationship between precipitation, evaporation and runoff. Coastal and marine waters looks at integrating management of water resources, the protection of marine environments, and the monitoring of changes in ecosystems and climate. Quality diagrams and explanations provide valuable support for the study of water resources and management research in the Geography syllabuses. WELCH, Geoff
Humankind and the cosmos: a view on life, climate and astronomy
Halbooks, 1999
ISBN 0958580723 [520.9]
Intended for readers interested in popular science, Welch endeavours to make science discoveries more interesting by personalising the text and giving his views. The range of topics is comprehensive: Life on earth; Our earth’s climate, featuring greenhouse warming; A brief history of astronomy, with notes on man’s achievements; and Chemical elements, from the structure of atoms to stellar evolution. Welcome to Australia’s minerals industry Selecting this link will take you to an external site.
The easiest way to explore this site’s possibilities is through the Site map. Perhaps the most useful section is Educational resources, where students can access information on a wide range of minerals. Here, in Rockfiles, a series of pages clearly describes the properties, uses, and sources of ten key metals produced by the Australian minerals industry. A map shows operating mines, and exercises in Mapping also feature for each mineral. This basic information is supplemented by Amazing facts, a bibliography of publications, and web sites for further research, i ncluding a virtual visit to a gold mine and case studies of several Australian mines. The educational content on the site is strong, and information is kept up to date. The site’s potential should be investigated by those taking the Earth and Environmental Science Option Mining and the Australian environment. J. Morgan
