There are three different career categories within the engineering profession. These are the different levels within the profession that people work at. It is similar to the hospital system where a person might train to be a doctor, a paramedic, a nurse or a nurse’s aide. The length of study and the information studied differ significantly depending on the category a person wants to join.

People training to enter the engineering profession will normally commence a program of study that is of a generalist nature. As you pass through your study there should be opportunities for you to specialise in one of the engineering disciplines that interests you. However, as in many professions the number of specialities has increased to enable people to work in newly emerging fields such as robotics and mechatronic engineering, environmental engineering, bio-medical engineering.
