Stage 6 Engineering Studies

Career profile

Multistage pumps manufactured by Weir Warman Ltd.

Name: Jenny Lam

Employer: Weir Warman Ltd

Position in company: Principal Design Engineer

Job description: Design and engineer products and ancillary equipment for the mining, power generation, chemicals, water/wastewater and food processing industries. Provide technical support to manufacturing operations. Conduct risk assessments and investigations.

Qualifications: Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) Honours Class 1 (The University of Queensland), Chartered Professional Engineer (The Institution of Engineers, Australia), Justice of the Peace (Qualified) (Department of Justice and Attorney General, Queensland Government).

Best thing about the job: The satisfaction of being able to solve many interesting problems that are highly varied in terms of their origin, complexity and development.

Worst thing about the job: The feeling of not being able to thank people enough for their contributions when they have been very helpful during a particularly busy time at work.

Strangest thing you’ve had to do: None that I can recall.

When you were at school, did you plan to do this type of work? My interest in Graphics, Maths and Science classes helped me develop a natural curiosity towards this type of work, but a field trip organised by the Institution of Engineers, Australia to various engineering sites in my final year at high school helped me commit to the university course selection.
