Examination
preparation
Activity 1
Read the Food Technology overview. It explains clearly
all the components of the syllabus and how they are going to
be examined. Complete the check list below to find out how well
you are prepared for the examination.
How well are you prepared
for the examination?
Have you:
- Checked the Food
Technology syllabus
and the content area of each strand?
Look for the Learn to (what you should know) and Learn
about columns (what you can do).
- Checked the outcomes for each strand of
study? Throughout the year you will
have addressed all of these outcomes.
- Summarised the learn to content
for each strand? It is impossible to learn huge amounts of notes
or texts. It is very important to get your information into manageable
portions. Summaries allow you to do this.
- Compiled a mind map for each strand, containing
headings and keywords and phrases? This forms an important check
list of knowledge, and allows you to find out what you know,
and what you still have to learn.
- Revised all class based assessment tasks?
These tasks address syllabus outcomes and often provide excellent
food examples so important when answering HSC questions.
- Revised all practical and experimental
food preparation activities? The hands on learning that takes
place in practical activities is invaluable when transferring
knowledge to answer written questions. Food Technology requires
an understanding and knowledge of practical food preparation
activities.
- Checked HSC
Food Technology Examination papers
? You can download these
from the Board of Studies web site. Study the question formats
and look at the time allocation for each section. This gives
you a valuable opportunity to practice how long it takes you
to complete the various types of questions and get used to exam
timeframes. You will notice that you have a five-minute reading
time before you start the paper. Use this to read the entire
paper and familiarise yourself with what you have to do. Look
especially at questions where there is a choice.
- Worked your way through the numerous activities
for each content strand on HSC Online? This is a great activity
when you are bored with the revision process and need a change
in learning style. The site also has study tips and help with
getting organised.
- Accessed the Glossary of key words?
These key words are used in the question stems of all HSC subjects,
and it is vital that you understand what they mean, so that you
can do what the question is actually asking you to do. Look for
the keywords in past Food Technology examination papers. You
will need to take the time to learn the meaning of all of the
keywords.
