Food processing in Australia and the Asia Pacific region

Production of primary produce was the basis of the food industry in the past. Value-added products are now considered the most profitable food industry activity for both local and international markets. In the option strand, Contemporary food issues - Marketplace, you will learn about value added products as a trend in the marketplace.

Activity

Read the following article from the journal, Food Australia, and complete the questions. You should find the journal in your school or local library.

January, 1997, pp.14-16.

  1. Many manufacturers are now focusing on the production of value-added products. List the advantages of this style of production, as identified in the Goodman Fielder operation.
  2. Conduct your own supermarket research and identify value-added products which are manufactured in Australia.
  3. Historically Australia has focused on the production of primary produce. List the traditional barriers to food processing in Australia.
  4. Why have food preferences changed from unprocessed staples to more sophisticated highly processed (value-added) foods?
  5. The Asian food market has the potential to be very profitable for Australian food manufacturers; however we must be in a position to compete with other countries which also identify the opportunities. Can Australia compete successfully? What obstacles will need to be overcome?
