Holidays, travel and tourism: sample answers and marking criteria

Activity 1 (10 marks)

Questions

a. Why is Sandrine writing to her parents? (2 marks)

Demonstrates a good understanding of  Sandrine's reasons 2 marks
Provides some relevant information 1 mark

Sample answer: Sandrine is travelling abroad. She has arrived in Australia and is contacting her parents to let them know what she has done and what she is planning to do.

b. Describe some activities that Sandrine has done in Alice Springs. (2 marks)

Marking criteria

Demonstrates a good understanding of  Sandrine’s activities 2 marks
Provides some relevant information 1 mark

Sample answer: Sandrine has visited Uluru and has climbed to the top of the rock.  She has camped under the stars.

c. How does she feel about her next stop? (2 marks)

Marking criteria

Demonstrate a good understanding how Sandrine is feeling about her next stop 2 marks
Provides some relevant information 1 mark

Sample answer:   Although Sandrine does not want to leave Alice Springs, she has been told good things about her next stopover which is Adelaide.  There are lots of things to do and see. She also plans to try Australian wines to check how good they really are!

d. Explain Sandrine’s feelings about Australia. (4 marks)

Marking criteria

Explains in detail with reference to the text how Sandrine feels about Australia 3-4 marks
Explains in some detail with reference to the text how Sandrine feels about Australia  2 marks
Provides some relevant information 1 mark

Sample answer: Sandrine feels Australia is wonderful. She has already taken two hundred photos. The people are nice. She loves the colours. The scenery is extraordinary. She loves the clear night sky.She thinks her mother would like it too. The language is positive and the tone is enthusiastic, and the exclamation marks enhance her wonder.
