Welcome to Minnamurra Rainforest. This is a virtual field trip that will let you
explore a dominantly subtropical, warm temperate rainforest. The
aim of this "Virtual Fieldtrip" is not to replace ordinary fieldwork
but to allow students and teachers the opportunity to explore another
environment for comparison. This field trip will essentially cover
aspects of the following HSC outcomes from the Stage 6 Geography
Syllabus:
- H2 explains the factors which place ecosystems at risk and the reasons for their protection
- H5 evaluates environmental management strategies in terms of ecological sustainability
- H6 evaluates the impacts of, and responses of people to, environmental change
- H8 plans geographical inquiries to analyse and synthesise information from a variety of sources
- H9 evaluates geographical information and sources for their usefulness, validity and reliability
- H10 applies maps, graphs and statistics, photographs and fieldwork to analyse and integrate data in geographical contexts
- H12 explains geographical patterns, processes and future trends through appropriate case studies and illustrative examples
- H13 communicates complex geographical information, ideas and issues effectively, using appropriate written and/or oral, cartographic and graphic forms.
It will include the following geographical skills and tools and
methods applicable to and useful in the workplace:
- describing patterns, relationships, networks, linkages and evidence of change within and between regions or areas
- determining the density of a specific feature on a map
- estimating the scale of aerial photographs
- identifying spatial associations, interactions and change
- constructing a precis map from an aerial photograph
- using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to examine spatial and ecological issues
- identifying, collecting and recording geographical data from a variety of primary sources
- constructing a log of events and activities, which records the development of a fieldwork activity
- synthesising data and evaluating the fieldwork activity
- using meterological data, satellite imagery and aerial photography
- determining the relevance of a geographical understanding
of ecosystems at risk to a particular vocation, such as managing
a national park or guiding tourist groups.
