Activity 1 Plastic as an environmental threat

Every year Clean Up Australia holds Clean Up Australia Day. This is a day where Australians can come together as a community to clean up our local environment. "On Clean Up Australia Day in 2005, plastic items represented 32% of the total rubbish collected" (Clean Up Australia - Plastic recycling fact sheet)

Read the Clean Up Australia plastic recycling fact sheet and answer the following questions.

  1. Explain why plastic is such an environmental threat.
  2. Outline the impact plastic has on the environment in terms of natural resources, persistence in the environment and marine life.
  3. Identify how plastic waste can be eliminated.
  4. Describe the threats posed to kerbside recycling.
  5. Differentiate between recyclable and non-recyclable plastics.
