The following are some explanations of cultural references in the prescribed text, the film Langitku Rumahku.

| Bejo | Person's name, meaning untung/beruntung usually used in rural areas. |
| Bekasi | An outlying area of Jakarta. |
| Bung | Term of address meaning brother, buddy. |
| cak | A term used in Surabaya meaning older brother. Like Mas in Javanese |
| dalem | Javanese honorific meaning saya. |
| Embah (mbah) | Term of address for older persons and term of respect for one's grandparents. |
| Gambir | A major train station in Jakarta. |
| kakung | Javanese honorific for males. When used in the film ndoro kakung refers to Andri's father. |
| Kang | Abbreviation of Javanese kakang older brother. |
| kerja bakti | Voluntary labour service. |
| Kowe | Colloquial Javanese term meaning you. |
| KTP | Kartu tanda penduduk identity card. |
| Lahir batin | Body and soul.
Maaf lahir batin is an expression by Muslims during Lebaran when asking for forgiveness. |
| langgar | Small mosque or prayerhouse. |
| le | Abbreviation of tole (term of address for Javanese boys). |
| magrib | dusk
Sembahyang magrib is the prayer time following sunset. |
| Mak (emak) | Ibu |
| Mbak | Term of address for Javanese woman of similar age to speaker, older sister (female equivalent of Mas). |
| Mbok | Form of address for older Javanese women of humble origin and form of address for servants. |
| MPR | Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat; People's Consultative Council |

In Indonesian society the concept of fate plays an important role in people's lives. |
| Ndoro | (Javanese) master, term of address for aristocracy. |
| Non (Nona) | Term of address for young unmarried women. |
| Nyah | Abbreviation of Nyonya; term of address for women of western or Chinese origin. |
| Om | Term of address for close family friends, borrowed from Dutch meaning uncle, often used by urban middle class families. |
| Pangeran Diponegoro | Prince Diponegoro; a Javanese prince who led a struggle against the Dutch in the early 19th century. |
| Raden (den) | Title of Javanese nobility for males and females. Den Roro is used for young females. |
| Sembahyang subuh | Dawn prayer approximately 4 am.

| Simbah | Affectionate term of address for older servant, also Javanese for grandmother. |
| solat (sholat) | Ritual Moslem prayers performed five times daily. |
| Tangerang | An area to the west of Jakarta. |
| Tugu pahlawan | Monument erected to the heroes of the Battle of Surabaya, who fought against the Dutch and their allies who returned to Indonesia at the end of 1945. 10 November is known as Hari Pahlawan. |
