ADOT Freeway
Management System
The Arizona Department of Transport site provides a detailed and
fascinating insight into an intelligent transportation system. It
provides a wealth of information for the components:
Information systems and databases; and Communication
systems; in the Information Processes & Technology:
Stage 6 syllabus (approved 1999). The site is characterised
by linked databases which detail the Freeway conditions,
Statewide weather, Tour information and On-line
bus bookings. The aspects of this intelligent transportation
system including: real time video and camera images; freeway
conditions; road closures; and maps; make this site useful for
learning about the applications of video and camera digital
communication, databases and HTML. The site is easily navigable
and most useful for teachers of all technology subjects. B.

Martin Dodge has assembled a collection of graphical
representations of the World Wide Web and many other cyberspaces.
These images are designed to help us visualise and comprehend the
global communications networks and the vast online information
resources that lie beyond our computer screens. Animated maps
showing Internet use around the world in real time, interactive
visual directories that map the information on more than 2
million sites and tools to map web browsing activities, are
amongst the many fascinating graphics on this site. Browsing this
site will help students of the Software Design &

Audacity: the free, cross-platform sound editor
This site offers free software for recording and editing sounds and audio files. Users can record live audio, and convert tapes or vinyl records to digital recordings and CDs. Features include the ability to cut and copy files, splice and mix an unlimited number of files and tracks, add effects such as echo and reverse, and alter the pitch, tempo and volume of a recording. Importantly, students can import, change and export a wide range of different file formats, including MP3, using optional encoder software. As open source software, the program code is available to study, copy, change, and share with others. The software is easy to use and it has broad cross-curriculum application. For instance, it could be used to enhance slide, video or podcast presentations, and to incorporate audio into school websites. It is particularly suited to those TAS subjects where digital media technical learning is a focus. P. Conroy

Bare bones 101 (A very basic web search tutorial)
The tutorials on this site would make an excellent introduction
to computers and support teaching skills related to ICT
(information communications technology) capabilities. It would
help students and teachers to keep up to date with ways of using
technology. The site offers an online tutorial on how to use the
Internet effectively, which teachers could use to complement
their strategies. The tutorial focuses on the basic search
techniques using Boolean logic and Proximity operators. There are
sections focused on the most commonly used search engines which
could guide students in selecting the most appropriate to their
information needs in different syllabuses. B. Maher

The material in this site provides a guide into a planning and
tracking schedule for team projects. Cardboard Schedule
was designed and built specifically for software development
projects and offers examples of multiple team schedules. The
option exists for the teacher to investigate a 30 day free
evaluation download of the software. This information is
invaluable to courses where students learn about: project plans;
project management tools; Gantt charts; and scheduling tasks and
communication management plans; in order to complete practical
projects of their own. A section on the Philosophy
of the company provides commonsense advice regarding a logical
approach to the planning, development and implementation of a

main ways of organising electronic records to deal with the vast
amounts of data stored in modern systems. This article uses case
studies to explore the differences between databases and the
issues related to sorting and searching for efficient information
retrieval. Advantages and disadvantages of unordered files,
buckets, binary search and hashing are all discussed and are
relevant to planning and design of software solutions in the

Lissa explains it all: HTML help and tutorial for kids
A comprehensive and well written series of tutorials on creating
and publishing a web site is presented here. Dozens of sequenced tutorials
cover options for web hosting, the role of search engines and text editors,
security issues, marketing, and design tools as well as basic and advanced
design principles. The tutorials are concise, professionally formatted, and
well supported with graphics. The language and tone is plain English and the
emphasis is very much on the range of possibilities within HTML, and on providing
design shortcuts. Some of the later instructional sections deal with complex
and highly technical options, and these are described only briefly. Teachers
are advised to familiarise themselves with the site prior to implementation
in the classroom. P. Conroy

Finally a web site has been
developed to address computer technology from the early days of
computer evolution. Exhibits allows teachers to take a
stroll down memory lane and revisit such computers as the Amstrad
PC-20 to the Big old Wang.
Students can access descriptions and graphics to appreciate the
progression in design to the development of the processor in its
current form. Originally built as a bulletin board for computer
enthusiasts, the site now provides users with access to examples
of computers which have contributed to, or hindered, the
technology we use in classrooms. Teachers can build research
modules around the site content to promote the use of secondary
sources of data, and to allow students to build on their
knowledge of the history of computers and their impact on
society. B. Maher
