Sample answer:
They missed their country, language, schools, Italian culture and their family. In order to be near to each other, Italians tended to create pockets of Italian culture such as Lygon St, Norton St and, in the country, Griffith and Lismore.
Italian food was a rarity, particularly in the country. Items such as coffee, wine, some vegetables, cheese, cold meats, pasta and desserts were hard to find, so they created farms where they worked together to create “a new Italy”.

What happened when they returned to Italy? (2 marks)

Sample answer:
They found that the Italy of the past did not exist any more and, in its place, was an unknown and different Italy.
