Condon, Christopher, The Modern World: Conflict and Change. Macmillan Education, 1994.
Chapters 7-12 provide clearly written summaries of the main events of the war. A good range of sources, both pictorial and written, support the skills sections at the end of each chapter.

Guest, Vic, Eshuys, Joe and Lawrence, Judith, World War I: Causes, Course and Consequences. Macmillan Education, 1990.
This book has a wealth of primary sources and many suggestions to teachers for using the evidence. There is a good chapter on essay writing and referencing in history.

McCallum, Anne, Evidence of War: Studying the First World War through Sources. Rigby Heinemenn, 1996.
An excellent new textbook that covers all relevant topics and provides a detailed approach to answering the Core using sources as evidence. Useful for both teachers and students.

Macdonald, Lyn, They Called It Passchendaele: The Story of the Third Battle of Ypres and of the Men Who Fought in It. Joseph, 1978.

O'Brien, Carolyn and Merritt, Alan, 1914-1918: The World at War. Heinemann Educational, 1991.
This book covers both the preliminary and HSC sections of the course. Considerable detail and well illustrated.

Stewart, D., Fitzgerald, J., and Pickard, A. The Great War - Sources and Evidence. Thomas Nelson, 1995.
This book covers both the preliminary and HSC sections of the course. It is particularly good on aspects of the Home Front in Australia, Britain and Germany.

Swinton, J., The First World War. Longman, 1995.
This book examines the origins of the war, war on the Western Front, the wider war and the home front (in Britain, Germany and Australia). There are documentary extracts and useful visual resources.

Winter, Dennis. Death's Men, Soldiers of the Great War. Penguin Books, 1978.
One of the best general books on the Great War. Winter looks very closely at the experiences of those who fought in the British Army. Excellent material, particularly on weapons and trench life.
