Courage to Care is an educational program and exhibition which among other things, pays tribute to the men and women who risked their lives during the Nazi era to save victims of the Holocaust. For students unable to visit an exhibition, the Courage to Care website contains oral histories of Holocaust survivors as well as the people who put themselves at personal risk to help them. Students are encouraged to visit:
Student and Teacher resources are available on the Education pages of the site. The ‘Stories of Courage’ pages include information on Anne Frank, the Holocaust and Survivors and Rescuers. Information on the location of current and upcoming exhibitions is also posted on the site.
Courage to Care is a program visited by over 40,000 students in NSW since its inception in 1999, and by over 160,000 people throughout Australia. It travels to regional areas, staying for about four weeks and inviting local schools within 100 kms to participate. Transport for students to the program is provided free.
The program focuses on the issues of discrimination, especially racism and bullying. Its overall message is that "one person can make a difference".
Students are guided through an exhibition of artefacts during which they are told about those non-Jews who went to extraordinary lengths to rescue Jews during the Holocaust; they listen to a Holocaust survivor and then take part in a "Living in Harmony" workshop which looks at the way individual students might deal with contemporary situations at school or in their community.
There is a follow-up program that students may complete back at school.
Where schools and individual students cannot access the program, Courage to Care's website provides a wealth of material and links to other teaching/learning resources. HSC students and teachers of Modern History will find the program and the website very useful as will secondary and primary school teachers of other Social Science subjects and PDHPE. The program sits firmly within syllabus outcomes and fits into School Welfare Plans.
Courage to Care encourages individual acts of courage, social activism, action against apathy, a sense of empathy, a better understanding of history.
