Buchlow, M. and Russell, G., Russia: Why
Revolution? Longman Cheshire, 1994.
This work is helpful for understanding the revolutionary
process, and useful on the aftermath of the revolution.
Campbell, C., Stalin: Soviet Leader, USSR
1924–1957. Macmillan, 1987.
Its most useful section deals with Stalin's planning and
activities prior to the 1930s.
Christian, D., Power and Privilege: The
Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and the Challenge of
Modernity. 2nd ed. Longman Cheshire, 1994.
The first edition is very good, but this is even better as
it was written after 1991, giving the author an opportunity
to place his analysis in a broader perspective.
Gill, G., Twentieth Century Russia: The Search
for Power and Authority. Nelson,
This provides useful coverage of the content of Russian
history.
Golby, J., et al., Between Two Wars:
Book 3. Open University Press, 1990.
Originally written for university students, this contains an
in-depth section on Russia between the wars which employs
highly detailed arguments; excellent for advanced students
and for teachers.
Mantin, P. and Lankester, C., From Romanov to
Gorbachev: Russia in the Twentieth Century. Hutchinson,
1989.
Although designed for GCSE students in Britain, this
contains relevant and accessible information for NSW HSC
students.
Medvedev, R., Let History Judge: The Origins
and Consequences of Stalinism. Oxford University Press,
1989.
Exceptionally detailed, this is a very useful work for the
very best. It is well written, but the author still has
trouble explaining the power and influence of Stalin.
Miller, S.T., Mastering Modern European
History. Macmillan Education, 1988.
This is a useful summary guide to Soviet Russia, although it
was not specifically written for the HSC course.
Pipes, R., The Russian Revolution,
1899–1919. Collins Harvill, 1990.
This is a comprehensive study of the revolutionary
period.
Riasanovsky, N., A History of Russia.
Oxford University Press, 1984.
A very detailed but also readable book, this has a
particularly good section on communist ideology and its
relationship to economic policy decisions.
