Tips for writing a musicology essay

Naming the essay

The title is the first contact the reader has with your work. Consider the following essay titles:

(1) Madness and mayhem

(2) A comparison of composition devices in Chopin’s piano music with those of Liszt, through a study of Ballade No. 4 in F minor and The Rigoletto Paraphrase.

(3) Ross Edward’s Insects

(4) Why was Ionisation ground breaking in its use of instrumentation, melodic treatment, rhythmic development, structure and the use of texture?

(5) The Beatles

All of the titles are informative. Some of them are catchy and attract interest, others are like the opening statements of the essay. A good rule of thumb is to keep your title simple and to the point!

Remember you will have to write this title on quite a few documents when preparing to submit your essay. It doesn’t have to outline your intentions, that should happen in the introduction, so it need not be long and detailed.
