Tips for writing a musicology essay
The portfolio
The musicology portfolio documents the development and progress of the essay over a period of time.
All musicology elective students are required to develop a portfolio. It is to be submitted to the school on the same day as your completed essay. It will be held at the school in case it is required at the marking centre.
What could you include in a portfolio?
- Copies of notes you have made while researching your essay.
- A listening log of pieces listened to as you crafted your essay.
- Material copied from secondary sources indicating the extent of your research.
- Annotated scores.
- Draft essays.
- A record of the issues you have struggled with and problems you have solved while developing the essay.
- Feedback from peers and teachers.
- A project plan or timeline to keep you focused.
- Self
evaluation and criticism.
The whole point of the portfolio is to keep a detailed record of your process and progress, and in doing so; it should help clarify the issues you are addressing.
