Core 2 Factors affecting performance

How can nutrition affect performance?

Athletes of all descriptions are encouraged to follow the basic principles of healthy eating. This includes following the Australian dietary guidelines. There is however, a need for athletes to increase their overall kilojoule intake to compensate for the additional amount of energy used during activity. The increase in the amount of energy required varies according to the activity being undertaken.

Athletes must also be conscious of their fluid intake during exercise and consider the place of supplementation.

Balanced diet

Whilst it is important to understand a balanced diet, an athlete must ensure that their diet is adequate enough to meet performance needs. Every sporting activity requires different levels of energy and therefore requires different nutritional needs.

Supplementation

Many athletes and coaches believe that a balanced diet alone is not enough for optimal performance. If an athlete uses extra substances in their diet it is referred to as diet supplementation. There are many types of supplements which are available to athletes to support their diets. These have varied effects on the body.

Hydration and fluid replacement

The body uses fluid as a cooling system. Fluid is a transporter for nutrients and helps maintain blood volume. It is vital for athletes to ensure their body is adequately hydrated during exercise to avoid the possibility of heat-related injury and to maintain peak performance.
