At many points in our lives we learn to do different skills. In learning or developing physical skills we progress through three stages of skill development.
Recognising what is peculiar to the cognitive, associative and autonomous stages of skill development will help us to acquire motor skills more quickly and with greater effect.

This is the first experience the learner has with a skill. At this stage the learner is introduced to the skills required to complete the movement.
When the individual has an understanding of the fundamentals of the skill they develop the movement at this stage.
This is the highest level of skill acquisition and is characterised by consistent achievement of the desired result.
