Dos and Don’ts - Safe fencing

  1. Always check that all the tools and materials needed for a fencing job are loaded in the vehicle before driving to the work site.

  2. When you’ve finished using the crowbar lay it in the sun nearby.

  3. Do not stand on or near a post hole digger while the tractor and PTO are operating.

  4. Always take care of and maintain fencing tools.

  5. If the barbed wire keeps catching as you pull it through the post holes, just yank harder.

  6. Always light a fire to get the billy boiling before you start fencing for the day.

  7. You should always make sure you tie neat knots.

  8. Try to finish the fencing job quickly as this saves money and is safer.

  9. To sight the line for a new fence you should fire a shot from a rifle into the top of the next strainer post.

  10. When working near a front-end loader never get under the raised bucket.

  11. Place fuel and oil containers in the shade away from the path of machinery.

  12. Shelter under a tall, shady tree if you are caught out in a thunderstorm while fencing.

  13. When using sharp tools such as picks, crowbars and chisels, check to see that other workers aren’t standing too close.

  14. When you’ve finished lunch throw any drink cans and bottles into the same gully where the old posts and wire were bulldozed.

  15. Don’t worry about snakes. They get out of the way when they hear machinery.

  16. Concentrate only on your own job. It’s the responsibility of tractor and bulldozer drivers to avoid other people on the work site.

  17. Read the operating instructions for a new piece of equipment before use and observe the decals on tractors and machinery.
