The future of Australian agriculture
The strength of Australian agriculture has been its ability to adapt to market
changes and to sustain growth in productivity. It will need to continue to
do this to remain competitive in world and domestic markets.
The factors which will influence growth in the future are:
- Farm size. There will continue to be a move to fewer but larger farms.
- Markets. Changes in consumer demand will see the development of new products,
eg low fat dairy foods and lean meat. Marketing will become even more sophisticated,
with campaigns being targeted to specific consumer groups.
- Research. Research will help farmers to remain competitive by providing
information on:
- improved land and resource management
- genetic research into both plants and animals
- introduction of new products.
- Emerging industries. The range of agricultural commodities will continue
to expand.
By meeting the demands of change, agriculture will remain an important part
of the Australian economy.
