Developing a software game

Creating your own software game is a great activity as this article shows. Angus Kidman relates the process he went through over one weekend. He used software called Klik and Play to create the game.

Syllabus outcomes

H1.2 A student differentiates between various methods used to construct software solutions.
H3.1 A student identifies and evaluates legal, social and ethical issues in a number of contexts.

This article provides a case study of software development for a given scenario and can be used to compare with the Wonderland case study. (SDD syllabus, p.34) It also provides stimulus material for discussion concerning the rights and responsibilities of software developers. (SDD syllabus, p.32)

Activity

  1. Identify which software development approach (SDD syllabus, p.34) was used here and give reasons for your answer.
  2. Make up a table showing what action Kidman undertook in each of the stages of the software development process.
  3. Kidman recognised the ethical issues surrounding the use of a popular singer’s name and image, and made a decision to use them in his game. He published the game on his web site and it was included on the free CD attached to a computer magazine.
What is your opinion of this action? Is it ethical or not? Make sure you can justify your answer with well thought out reasons.
  4. Kidman also learnt an important lesson concerning documentation. Can you identify it?

Compare your answers.
