Name: Joanne Pagano
Current position: Lecturer in Pattern making, Fashion and Textiles, University of Technology, Sydney
What does the position involve?
Teaching the fundamental principles of pattern making techniques using demonstration, lecture, notes and exercises. Setting assignments and marking student work.
What advice would you give to a Year 12 student considering pursuing a similar career?
Think carefully, this field requires a lot of talent, determination, hard work, design skill and lots of money to do the course. The fashion industry is a shrinking field of employment. Talent and luck are everything.
What do you see are the future directions of your industry?
In a nutshell, without a major re-think by government, it's not a bright future. The market is shrinking, manufacturing is done off-shore, mostly quality is deteriorating and individuality is dying.
