Historical and contemporary design development: Contemporary designer Lisa Ho

In the Area of Study: Design, you will investigate and analyse the influence of historical, cultural and contemporary developments on textiles. This tutorial focuses on the influence of historical and cultural influences on a contemporary Australian designer.

Activities involve accessing material on the performance costumes designed by Australian contemporary designer, Lisa Ho, for the Opening Ceremony of Sydney 2000 Olympic Games from the Powerhouse Museum.

Outcomes
This material addresses aspects of the following syllabus outcomes.

The student:

H6.1 analyses the influence of historical, cultural and contemporary developments on textiles.
H4.1 justifies the selection of fabric, yarn, fibre and fabric finishing techniques for specific end-uses.

Ceremonial costume

An analysis of the Ceremonial Costume for the Opening Ceremony of Sydney 2000 Olympic Games allows you to develop your understanding of the influence of culture on design and textiles.

Further analysis allows you to develop an understanding of the relationship of properties and performance of textiles to specific end-uses.

Activities

  2. Sketch the detail of the traditional and contemporary design features of the bodice, sleeve and frog closures.

  3. Identify the garment styles and the fabric structures that make up the costume.

  4. Describe and illustrate the special structural features of the costume that make it suitable for a performance such as the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games.

  5. Review the accompanying Statement of significance for the costume then outline the inspiration for the costume.

  6. Explain the cultural symbolism of the garment to Australian’s multicultural heritage.

  7. Review the Production notes and identify the other design forms described by Lisa Ho as ‘visual and cultural icons’.
